The wavy lines represent the Ohio River and symbolize the trivium (grammar, logic, and rhetoric). The classical temple is in the likeness of the Pantheon and Jefferson Memorial. The quill and inkwell recall the traditional methods and subject matters of learning. The oak represents knowledge, rooted in appreciation of the true, the good, and the beautiful.
Our motto is Scientia est libertas, which translates to "Knowledge is freedom". Our nation's founders believed that success of political self-government requires a flourishing of personal self-government. Both are essential to preserving our republic, and both require proper education and civic virtue.
